The Ohio District 5 Area Agency on Aging announced its 2023 Scholarship Program. Trustees elected to provide three scholarship awards to individuals for higher education or certification programs benefiting the field of aging network. Scholarship amounts are: $2,000 for a student attending a four-year university; $1,000 for a student attending a two-year college or technical school, center of education or is pursuing a certification; and $1,000 for a student attending any type of higher institute of learning or certification and is a child, grandchild or stepchild of an actively employed (full time or part-time) Ohio District 5 Area Agency on Aging staff member.
Applicants must be a high school graduate (graduated in 2022 or earlier or hold a GED) and reside in Ashland, Crawford, Huron, Knox, Marion, Morrow, Richland, Seneca or Wyandot counties.

ASHLAND — The department of theatre at Ashland University continues its 2022-23 theme of “Standing Up, Standing Out” by presenting the musical comedy “Once Upon a Mattress” Thursdayp-Sunday, Feb. 16-19. Performances are in the Hugo Young Theatre, with the Thursday, Friday and Saturday shows beginning at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday’s matinee at 2 p.m.
“Once Upon a Mattress” is based on the Hans Christian Andersen fairytale “The Princess and the Pea.” Teresa Durbin-Ames, associate professor of theatre at AU who serves as the director, describes “Once Upon a Mattress” as not “your typical fairytale, but fun for the entire family.”
Tickets can be purchased from the AU campus store in person or by going to ashland.universitytickets.com . Tickets are $2 for AU students, $5 for non-AU students and $10 for adults, faculty/staff and senior citizens. Tickets will not be available for purchase at the door.

Richland Academy of the Arts welcomes new visual arts instructor
Richland Academy of the Arts is excited to welcome visual arts instructor Barbie Waters to its staff. Waters has a bachelor of arts degree in fine art, with a painting and graphic design focus. She has worked as a graphic designer for 15-plus years serving small businesses and many area nonprofits.
She will offer two visual arts classes that have been designed with the homeschool student in mind, but all students are welcome. She will instruct Introduction to Visual Arts for students in grades 3-5 and Visual Art through Drawing for grades 6-9. Both classes begin Feb. 27.

LOUDONVILLE — The Cleo Redd Fisher Museum in Loudonville continues its Speaker Series Feb. 20 with a look into the British East India Company and how the company forged an empire out of a mutiny against its own government.
Historian Dr. Christina Welsch, associate professor at the College of Wooster, will focus on a hidden history of disorder within the army. In 1809, over 1,200 white officers in southern India mutinied against the Company’s civilian government. British onlookers were horrified, condemning the violence as an act of treason that would lead to imperial collapse. Yet, the officers emerged from the chaos with increased power, while their opponents faced disgrace within colonial society.
Welsch’s first book, “The Company’s Sword: The East India Company and the Politics of Militarism, 1644-1858” (Cambridge University Press, 2022), explores how military actors influenced the ideology of the colonial state in India. Her second project is an examination of the wars between the British Company and the Indian state of Mysore.
